General Manager of Mining Operations

Our client, a leading producer of anthracite coal in the United States, is seeking a General Manager of Mining Operations to oversee all aspects of their mining operations. Job Purpose

The General Manager of Mining Operations will work closely with the site management team and report directly to the Chief Operating Officer. This role is responsible for directing all activities related to mining operations, including safety, environmental, and administrative functions. The successful candidate will ensure the financial success of operations through strategic planning, analysis, and budgeting, driving both short and long-term performance.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Strategy: Plan, direct, and lead all mining operations to ensure operational success, with a top priority on safety standards and practices.
  • Performance Management: Achieve continuous production, safety, and cost goals by implementing best practices and policies within the mining operations.
  • Team Synergy: Foster a high-performance culture, aligning the management team with business unit objectives to create synergy and drive results.
  • Reclamation Activities: Lead reclamation activities at various properties, maintaining future operational options for other sites.
  • Objective Setting: Establish and achieve mine objectives and goals, ensuring compliance with environmental permits and regulations.
  • Financial Management: Collaborate with the finance team to manage capital and operating budgets, optimize financial performance, and ensure adherence to budget targets.
  • Reporting: Utilize cost reporting systems to provide accurate and timely reports, budgets, and forecasts to the executive team.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Maintain and develop relationships with business partners, company stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.

  • Leading the expansion of mining operations into new areas to increase production capacity.
  • Implementing advanced mine planning software to optimize resource management and operational efficiency.
  • Driving cost-reduction initiatives while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in a fast-paced mining environment.
  • Progressive leadership experience with 5-10 years of proven ability to lead high-performance teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong financial skills (analysis, budgeting, planning).
  • Result-oriented with a strategic focus.
  • Strong leadership and management ability.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with people at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Mine planning software/scheduling software is considered an asset.
  • Ability to deal with the public/community, regulatory agencies, and government officials in a professional manner.
