Chief Environmental/Closure Lead

Our client is seeking a to join their high-performing team, focusing on large-scale environmental remediation and mining projects across the western U.S. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that protect our environment and communities, with a particular emphasis on supporting federal and state clients like the EPA and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.

This position can be based in Billings, MT, with hybrid options available for candidates located near other company offices, or fully remote for those in the western U.S. Travel to project sites will be required.

Summary:

As the Senior Engineer V, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Managing technical aspects of large environmental restoration and mine reclamation projects under CERCLA and RCRA, including Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) and Remedial Design/Remedial Action (RD/RA).
  • Leading the development of engineering studies, designs, and specifications for contaminated site remediation.
  • Reviewing project specifications, drawings, and ongoing construction to ensure compliance with design and regulatory standards.
  • Overseeing Potentially Responsible Party (PRP) interactions and providing guidance on regulatory matters.
  • Directing technical teams and communicating effectively with clients, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
  • Supporting business development by contributing to proposals and identifying new project opportunities.

Potential Projects

  • Large-scale mine reclamation projects in the western U.S.
  • Federal remediation efforts involving emerging contaminants such as PFAS.
  • Collaborative environmental cleanup projects with agencies like the EPA and Montana DEQ.
  • Remediation of complex chemical and radiological contamination sites.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • At least 15 years of experience managing and executing environmental remediation and construction projects, with a strong focus on CERCLA and RCRA
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Environmental, Chemical, or Civil Engineering (a Master’s degree may reduce the required experience).
  • Proven ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and teams while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills to effectively engage with stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • PE registration.
  • Experience working with the EPA or state agencies on mining-related projects.
  • MS in a relevant engineering field, such as Mining or Environmental Engineering.
  • Familiarity with advanced remedial technologies and strategies.
