Lab/Operations Manager

Location: Reporting to the General Manager of Canada

Our client is seeking an experienced and dedicated Lab/Operations Manager to lead and oversee the daily operations of their laboratory. About the Role

The Lab/Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective functionality of the laboratory. From mentoring and training staff to managing budgets, equipment, and safety compliance, this position demands a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills. The successful candidate will thrive in a role where no two days are the same, adapting to shifting priorities and optimizing workflows to meet stringent quality and turnaround targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and turnaround targets.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop staff, ensuring proper training and accountability.
  • Manage equipment performance, ensuring uptime through preventive maintenance.
  • Optimize workflows for efficiency and implement cost-saving measures.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and monthly business reviews.
  • Investigate and resolve customer inquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Drive continuous improvement through productivity projects and innovation.

Potential Projects

  • Designing and implementing new workflows to reduce turnaround time.
  • Leading ISO 17025 accreditation efforts for emerging analytical techniques.
  • Developing and launching training programs for laboratory staff.
  • Managing the commissioning of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
  • Creating a data-driven dashboard to monitor and improve key performance indicators (KPIs).

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or related scientific discipline (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of laboratory experience, ideally in geochemistry or similar fields.
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams of 20+ employees in a laboratory setting.
  • Expertise in quality assurance, ISO accreditation, and laboratory best practices.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Familiarity with LIMS, analytical techniques, and geochemical instrumentation.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
